fugazi photo of the day

joe lally - glebe community centre, ottawa, canada, september 1989

okay, so i have joked about doing "fugazi photo of the day" and how i have enough photos of them to do a complete year, well, here we go.

actually, it will just be a photo a day (or two) until i leave for Europe October 10, as a lead up to the release of Fugazi's two new records on Dischord -- the full length The Argument and the Furniture+2 seven inch/CDEP. Both releases come out on October 8 in Europe and October 15 (my birthday), in North America.

here is a photo of new dad Joe Lally the first time i saw Fugazi and the first of five shows i put on for them in Ottawa over the years. congrats to Joe and Antonia on the birth of their daughter Lidia at 3:15 am, 09.26.01 -- word on the street is that she looks like a little elf princess.

the first time i heard Fugazi was at my friend Aniko's place. her brother had gone to DC on a school trip and asked someone in a record store for a good local punk record to bring back for his sis. so i have Pete and Aniko to thank for exposing me to Fugazi.

the first time i met them, they had stopped by CKCU-FM (the radio station i did a punk show at) to tape an interview. afterwards, they gave me a ride to the show. five minutes in the van and Guy was giving me a hard time about something or other in a totally sarcastic yet joking way. i knew right away these guys were great.

i was supposed to see them in Montreal the night prior as part of a two day road trip to see polar opposites, the Dead Milkmen and Fugazi. their show was cancelled due to a flakey promoter improperly securing an all ages venue, which was hard to do in Montreal back in the late 80s. after finding this out, i called my roomate Colin to check in -- Fugazi had called and wanted to come stay with us a night early. Colin was like "you don't have to rush back to Ottawa, i'm having Athana over for dinner and she's vegetarian so she can cook for them." thanx pal, trying to mack on my ex while i am out of town. that only bugged me for a moment, petty jealousy is easlily erased by the excitement of punk rock.

the show opened with local straight-edge band Harsh Reality, who ended their set with "Filler", expecting Ian to grab the mike and sing along, which didn't happen. the Trapt played as well, one of the best local bands of the late 80s. there were 300+ kids packed into the hot and humid community centre basement, i was front and centre shooting and dancing, shirking my organisational responsibilities leaving them in the hands of the co-promoters. (which i still do to this day when it comes to bands i truly love.)

Fugazi played most of the songs off their first two records and previewed stuff from Repeater. Guy only played guitar on a couple songs spending most of the set flailing around the right side of the stage while Ian anchored the left side. they ended the set with "In Defence of Humans" -- the only time i have heard them play it and for that i am thankful. i have an audio tape of the show somewhere...

post show highlights included:
- an older record collector guy asking Ian to sign his Minor Threat Filler 7" and Ian dating the signature by signing it "this is my brother Alec, he played in The Untouchables, Faith, Ignition.... Ian"
- taking forever to explain to the unfathomable to the Pizza Pizza operator -- that we wanted a pizza without cheese
- Ian waking up super early the next morning to take my roomate Colin and his new kitten Gibby to the vet to get fixed
- Joe walking out of the patio door carrying a squirming toque gingerly buy the brim. i wish i had a picture of the cat-napping in progress

happy 30th birthday craig!
