photo of the day

this is one of the most insane live performers i have ever witnessed -- Yamatsuka Eye of The Boredoms. i shot this in NYC outside of the new music seminar headquarters. i was hanging out with Tim Perlich of Toronto's Now magazine at the seminar and he asked me to shoot a few pix of Eye. we ran into the band pillaging the seminar freebie floor and i managed to snag him for a quick 10 minute shoot.

the Boredoms were playing at a disco called Club USA. the inside of the bar looked like the set for Blade Runner if Andy Warhol was the designer -- a futuristic pop art motif with a big spiral slide in the middle of the club -- which fit the event nicely, a Japanese government sposored music night.

i arrived at the venue just before the Boredoms scheduled set time. they club staff weren't letting any more seminar badges in, ripping people off for an extra ten bucks. shortly thereafter they closed the doors completely. word on the street the next day was that Kris Novaselic couldn't get in despite his desperate pleas of "let me in, i'm Andy Kaufman!" why does Novaselic gets stranded outside, while Boy George just saunters in?

as i weaved thru the music industry/cultural VIP crowd a bad, unknown at the time, Japanese version of Dee-Lite was playing -- Pizzicato 5. their set was supposed to be over but they kept on going for another half hour. finally the Boredoms took the stage and obliterated the audience for three songs. then their set was cut due to a dancey pants curfew set to get the music seminar crew out and the beautiful people in. needless to say there was a near riot with 100+ boredoms fans booing, chanting "Boredoms!, all simultaneously giving the night's MC the finger. the band tried to continue but the PA was cut and that was it. the next day "no one shuts down the boredoms" flyers appeared around the east village advertizing a midnight show at Irving Plaza. that show was even better as they actually played a full set to a room full of fans. Eye flew around the stage wire-fu style with a feather duster taped to his mike and his knit cap pulled down over his face, his cohorts bashing dual drumkits, wailing on a multi-pedaled guitar rig and pounding a beatbox/vocoder gizmo.

when the Boredoms toured canada opening for Nirvana's final tour this photo appeared on the cover of Now magazine.

even tho i got to see the Boredoms twice due to the ordeal, i despise the Pizzicato 5 to this day.

(04.01.01 - irony rears it's head yet again on this site... unbeknownst to me, 03.31.01 was the Pizzicato 5's last show - shawn)
